What is Kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tropical tree of the Rubiaceae family. It’s native to Southeast Asia, commonly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia. The trees can grow up to 25 meters, and their leaves have been used in herbal medicine since the 19th century. Traditionally, the leaves were dried then brewed into tea or simply chewed in their raw form. The taste is quite bitter.
The leaves contain a variety of alkaloids though the two most prominent are mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These are responsible for Kratom’s stimulating feel-good effects on the mind and body.
The effects are comparable to caffeinated coffee which is also part of the Rubiaceae family.
Again, in smaller doses (1-5g) Kratom has more of a stimulatory effect. In larger doses (5-15g), Kratom acts as more of a sedative. These effects vary from person to person based on an individual’s body size, age, metabolism, food intake, and current tolerance.
The 'Feel Good' Benefits
Kratom has mood-boosting properties and also promotes relaxation and calming of the nerves. It’s commonly used prior to social events as it tends to make users more talkative and confident. Again, much like coffee, it can raise alertness and energy. Many declare feeling happier and more active roughly 15-30 minutes after ingesting Kratom, and the effects peak 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Kratom is currently not approved by the FDA, and we advise buyers to only purchase from reputable companies.
Due to its effects, individuals do have the ability to become dependent on Mitragynine, especially when ingested on a consistent basis at high doses.
It is recommended that you only follow the recommended dosage listed on Kratom product labels.
